About Me
I'm Trisha, a bibliophile obsessed with reading, reviewing, logging, discussing, organizing, smelling, and touching books. No tasting though. That's just strange. My job feeds my passion as I teach literature, composition, and film to (mostly) eager undergraduate students.
About eclectic/eccentric
eclectic / eccentric is a website featuring reviews of a wide variety of books written by a college professor who sees value in both Hamlet and Harry Potter. Classic lit, graphic novels, SFF, YAL, plays, and films, all that can be read is featured. As the title of my blog indicates, I am varied in my interests, so books of all styles, genres, shapes, and sizes find their way into my library and onto my blog.
What, How, and When I Review
When it comes to fiction, I tend to read classic novels, dystopian lit, science fiction, satire, and fantasy (including folklore and mythology). I also enjoy young adult literature with a focus on the paranormal. I enjoy graphic novels, short stories, novels, and even chunksters. My nonfiction reading focuses on personal essays and memoirs, film studies, and narrative nonfiction. I tend to shy away from self-help books, contemporary mysteries, poetry, religious works, and chick lit. While these are preferences, I am always open to a good book regardless of genre, age category, or format. I do, however, only accept print copies for review.
When I read and review a book, I do so from my own personal opinion and all reviews are honest. If you have a particular review date in mind, I generally need the book a month in advance. If you don't need the review at a specific date, I will try to review the book within two months of receiving it. I do cross-post reviews to LibraryThing and from time to time, Amazon. I'm open to book tours, guest posts, interviews, giveaways, and unique ideas.
The Rating System
Avoid - Why bother reading it when there are so many better books out there?
To get an Avoid rating, a book probably annoyed the living beejesus out of me for some reason, and I am kind of sad that I wasted time reading it.
Accept - If someone offers it to you, you might as well give it a go.
To get an Accept rating, a book must entertain me and/or make me think, but probably didn't make me do both. Accept(able) books are good reads that I enjoy and promptly forget. Quite a few guilty pleasures fall into this category as well as intellectual books that weren't entertaining.
Borrow - Actively seek out this book to read it.
To get a Borrow rating, a book must be entertaining, thought-provoking, and memorable.
Buy - You will want to read this one over and over again.
To get a Buy rating, a book must blow my mind to tiny little pieces and then reassemble them in a new and delightful way.
